hani’s story

February 2025

Hani, a 12-year-old child living in Marjeyoun, South Lebanon, lost his ability to speak and developed extreme sensitivity to noise after witnessing the conflict escalations in October 2023. The traumatic events, including bombings and loud sounds, left Hani mute and deeply stressed. Despite his parents’ efforts to seek help, they struggled until they found support through the “Back to the Future” remote Basic Literacy and Numeracy (BLN) classes.

Through the BLN program, Hani  was provided with holistic support, including specialized non-verbal communication techniques, speech therapy, structured psychological support, and help from his teachers. The case manager introduced creative communication methods such as  drawing and playing, helping him to express emotions and regain confidence. The psychologist ensured consistent follow-up care, gradually helping Hani overcome his trauma, rebuild his social skills and reintegrate into his learning environment.

Today, Hani can once again speak, interact with his family, and actively participate in lessons, making a powerful journey of recovery.
